MADISON, Wis. - The 10th-ranked California women's soccer team began the 2006 season with a 1-0 triumph over Indiana Friday afternoon on the opening day of the Wisconsin Soccer Invitational at the McClimom Soccer Complex.

"It looked like a first game for both teams," said Kevin Boyd, who enters his 10th season at the helm at Cal as the winningest coach in program history. "We have a lot to work on, but the play was affected by wet and sloppy field conditions from rain earlier in the day. We dealt well with the physicality of the game and had good energy in the second half."

Cal sophomore forward Valerie Barnes netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 40th minute. The play began with a far-post slotted ball on the ground from freshman midfielder Kelly Menachof. The dangerous cross went off a defender and back to Cal, which delivered two unsuccessful shots, including one from Barnes. Barnes took advantage of her second attempt in the wild series in front of the Hoosiers' goal by putting the ball into the back of the net. Redshirt freshman reserve forward Torrey Delaplane was credited with the assist.

Barnes, a reserve, tallied her only game-winning of 2005 in the Bears' last win of the season - a 2-1 triumph over UTEP in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Today's goal marked her third of her career.

The Bears (1-0) didn't capitalize on two one-v-one opportunities with Indiana goalkeeper Stacey Van Boxmeer, who secured three saves during the game. Senior Anna Key recorded three saves for the Bears, who tied a school record with 14 shutouts last season.

Indiana (0-1) held an 11-8 shot advantage in the teams' first-ever meeting. Each team took six shots in the first half.

Boyd added that senior defender Alivia Mazura and junior defender Kristine Relja "played sound." He also complemented the play of Menachof in her freshman debut.

The Bears return to action against host Wisconsin Sunday, Aug. 27, at noon PT.
