Godfrid Scores Two Goals, Field Hockey Rolls onto Victory

BERKELEY - After going into penalty strokes with American on Saturday, the California Golden Bears (2-0, 0-0 NorPac) bounced back and defeated UMASS, 3-0, on Sunday at Maxwell Family Field.
The Bears scored first and never looked back. With only 10 minutes left in the first half, senior forward Valentina Godfrid capitalized on a scoring drive giving the Bears the lead. Two minutes later, Godfrid scored again placing Cal on top, 2-0, going into halftime.
During the second half the defense took center stage for both teams. Sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Sykes tallied a season-high six saves during the game, including five in the second half.
Sophomore forward Andrea Lo finally broke through the defense, scoring with five minutes left in the game off a Godfrid failed shot attempt.
The Bears will welcome the defending national champions, Maryland, at Maxwell Family Field on Tuesday for a 10 a.m. (PST) match. This will be the first time the Terrapins have played on the Berkeley campus.
