BERKELEY - It was a showdown between Cal's senior forward Valentina Godfrid and Pacific's Vianney Campos on Saturday afternoon at Brookside field. Campos and Godfird both line the top of the national goal and point leaderboards. However Godfrid and the Bears did not let a late surge by Campos control the game, as Cal squeaked past the Tigers, 3-2 in Stockton, Calif.
Godfrid attacked first scoring 13 minutes into the game off a penalty corner. She was assisted by sophomore forward Andrea Lo and sophomore Carolina Bistue. Ten minutes following her goal, Godfrid assisted sophomore midfielder Ashley Glosz's on goal, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead at half.
Campos scored in the early minutes of the second half, edging the Tigers closer. The Bears aggressively fought back seven minutes later with a goal by Christina McGrath off another penalty corner. Lo and junior midfielder Rachel Moffitt were credited with assists.
The Tigers edged closer as Campos scored Pacific's another goal seven minutes later. Cal was able to hold off the late surge by Campos and the Tigers to walk away with the victory.
Defensively for the Bears, sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Sykes tallied six saves.
The Bears travel across the Bay to face rival Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. (PST) in Stanford, Calif.
