Field Hockey Falls to No. 2 Wake Forest, 5-1

BERKELEY - After having success in its last two games, the California Golden Bears field hockey team (4-2, 0-0 NorPac) couldn't get the ball in the net against No. 2 Wake Forest. Cal lost 5-1 to the Demon Deacons on Monday afternoon at Maxwell Family Field.
Wake Forest started shooting early on, out shooting the Bears 13 to two in the first half. Wake Forest's Christine Suggs scored the first goal ten minutes into the game. The Demon Deacon's Michelle Kasold connected for their second score.
Cal's senior forward Valentina Godfrid had an open look at the goal right before the end of the first half, but the ball was saved by Wake Forest's goalkeeper Kristina Gagliardi.
In the first ten minutes of the second half Lauren Crandall scored her first of two penalty strokes, giving Wake Forest the 3-0 lead. Five minutes following, Crandall scored again off a pass from her teammate Melissa Martin. Crandall's final goal was off a penalty shot.
The Bears' lone goal was scored by Godfrid off a penalty stroke with four minutes left in the game.
Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Veronica Sykes matched her career-high, 10 saves, during the game. Last season, Sykes' first recorded 10 saves against Wake Forest in the NCAA Regional.
The Bears return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 9 to face rival Stanford. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (PST) start at Maxwell Family Field.
