California held a 3-2 lead over No. 3 Wake Forest through 68 minutes, but the Demon Deacons scored two goals in the final two minutes to defeat the Golden Bears, 4-3, on a rainy Friday at Maxwell Family Field. The Bears' record fell to 8-4, while Wake Forest's record improved to 8-4 after the non-conference match.
"That feeling of `almost' in our last three big games is cumulatively getting bigger," Cal coach Shellie Onstead said. "It came down to two minutes here. You've got to give Wake credit for finding a way to do it, but I'm really proud of this team."
Cal has now lost two straight one-goal games to top-10 teams, including a 2-1 setback at then-No. 8 James Madison on Oct. 7, and dropped a 3-0 match at No. 19 Virginia on Oct. 4.
Against Wake Forest, Cal junior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche, in her first complete game of the season, made 14 saves to help keep the Bears close. For the game, the Demon Deacons outshot Cal, 25-10, and took 11 short corners to Cal's eight.
A goal by Bears junior forward Ashley Glosz had given Cal a 3-2 lead in the 58th minute.
The Demon Deacons could have tied the match after earning a penalty stroke in the 64th minute, but Wake junior midfielder Liz Fries hit the post.
Demon Deacons senior forward Chelsea Cipriani, assisted by sophomore forward Kim Romansky, scored her second goal of the game in the 69th minute and sophomore midfielder Regina Shannon tallied the game-winning goal in the 70th minute - technically at 69:34 - to give the Demon Deacons the victory.
"Three inches farther and we would've been in overtime," Onstead said of Shannon's strike.
Cal took a 2-1 halftime lead despite the fact that Wake outshot the Bears, 11-6, and had a 9-5 advantage in corners in the first 35 minutes.
Bears junior midfielder Andrea Lo scored the game's first goal in the 21st minute, collecting a loose ball in the Demon Deacons' circle and firing inside the far post.
Just 31 seconds later, Cipriani collected her first goal of the game to tie the score at 1-1.
In the 24th minute, senior forward Jennifer Crane converted off a Glosz assist to give the Bears its 2-1 lead.
Knoche saved a shot by Romansky in the 46th minute. Five seconds later, Wake junior midfielder Michelle Kasold scored to tie the match at 2-2, which stood until Glosz and the final two Demon Deacons' goals decided the game.
Cal hosts Northwestern at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.
