TEMPE, Ariz. -
Freshman forward Alex Morgan posted two goals to lead No. 18 California to a 3-1 victory over Arizona State Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 9-5 overall (1-3 Pac-10), while the Sun Devils fell to 9-7 (3-2) after today's game that was broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Arizona.
"Arizona State came out very motivated and attacked us," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "We did a poor job defending set pieces at the beginning of the game. We got back into the game with great effort by the entire team. The goal Alex scored to tie the game was fantastic, one of the best I've seen all season in terms of service and execution. I'm proud of the girls."
Kylla Sjoman gave Arizona State a 1-0 lead with a goal off a free kick in the fifth minute of the game, but Morgan sent the Bears into halftime tied a 1-1 with her 23rd-minute goal. She scored her sixth goal of the year on a header, with junior forward Valerie Barnes and senior forward Stephanie Wieger earning assists.
Wieger netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 64th minute. Senior defender Kristine Relja passed the ball to junior forward Nikki Schrey, who flicked the ball to Wieger for her third goal of the season. The assist marked Relja's first career point.
Morgan capped the scoring with a break-away goal with two seconds left on the clock. The product of Diamond Bar now leads Cal with 14 points and seven goals.
ASU, which is coached by former Cal head coach Kevin Boyd, held a 12-9 shot advantage, with Wieger and Morgan topping Cal with three shots each. The Bears owned a 7-2 edge in shots on goal. Boyd is in his first year at ASU after directing the Bears the previous 10 seasons.
Sophomore Gina Pellegrini returned for Cal in goal after missing the UCLA game with an injury. Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes and secured one save. Briana Silvestri notched four saves for the Sun Devils.
Cal wraps up its road trip at Arizona Sunday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. MT.
