STANFORD, Calif. - No. 11 California advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season with a 2-0 victory over No. 16 Santa Clara Friday evening at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 15-5 with their seventh consecutive win and third straight over Santa Clara, while the Broncos finished their season at 12-6-3.

Junior forward Nikki Schrey came off the bench to record what eventually proved to be the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute. Schrey received a through ball from sophomore midfielder Katie Oakes and shot the ball from 15 yards past Santa Clara's charging goalkeeper, Meagan McCray. Bears junior forward Valerie Barnes started the counter attack by connecting with Oakes. The goal was Schrey's third of the season and second against the Broncos this year.

Cal blanked then-No. 1 Santa Clara, 2-0, on the road Sept. 30. Schrey had the second goal in that contest.

Freshman reserve forward McKenna-Louise McKetty added an insurance goal for the Bears in the 72nd minute today. McKetty posted her first career goal after she received a lead pass from freshman forward Alex Morgan, dribbled around the diving goalkeeper and shot the ball inside the left post past a defender on the goal line.

Neither team took a shot for the first 15 minutes of the game. Cal senior Caitlin Hannegan fired a 25-yard rocket off where the left post and cross bar meets in the 36th minute for the first quality scoring chance for either team. Cal sophomore goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini, who made five saves to help the Bears record their 11th shutout of the season, kept the game scoreless with about four minutes to play in the opening half by acrobatically punching SCU's Courtney Lewis' header over the cross bar. Pellegrini saved Kiki Bosio's (the Broncos' leading scorer) hard shot in the 56th minute.

Cal held a 5-4 shot advantage in the first half and a 15-13 edge for the game. The Bears had many opportunities to score in the second half, including on a shot off the cross bar by freshman defender Meagan Jesolva in the 51st minute and on a header by Morgan that was saved by McCray in the 61st minute. In the 66th and 68th minutes, Jesolva and senior midfielder Caroline Lea launched dangerous shots.

Cal advances to play No. 1-seeded Stanford Sunday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m. at the same venue. The Cardinal shut out Sacramento State, 7-0, tonight to knock the Hornets out of their first NCAA Tournament.
