Cal Loses to No. 12 Notre Dame, 16-11

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior Laura Cavallo scored four goals for California but the Golden Bears lost to 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 16-11, on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center. The Bears' record fell to 5-4, while the Irish improved to 10-3.

Cavallo led Cal in scoring with five points. Notre Dame's Jane Stoeckert led all scorers with six points (3 goals, 3 assists). As a team, the Irish outshot Cal, 39-23, and had the edge in draw controls, 19-10.

The Bears took a 3-1 lead with goals from sophomore Madeleine Dale, Cavallo and freshman Alyse Kennedy, who struck at the 8:07 mark of the first half. Bears senior Liz Reifsnyder assisted on Dale's and Kennedy's goals; Cavallo scored off a free-position shot.

After an Irish goal, Cavallo set up a Reifsnyder goal at 10:52 and junior Danni Zuralow scored an unassisted goal at 11:10 to give the Bears a 5-2 advantage.

But Notre Dame scored the final six goals of the half to moved ahead, 8-5, at the break.

The Irish took seven-goal leads three times, at 14-7, 15-8 and 16-9. Cal sophomore Ghillie Little and Dale scored the game's last two goals, at 57:26 and 59:43, respectively, to make the final score 16-11.

The Bears, who are 0-3 on their current road trip, end the trip with a game at two-time defending national champion Northwestern at 4 p.m. CT on Monday, April 9.
