California lost, 22-8, to top-ranked Northwestern on Monday afternoon in Evanston, Ill. Junior Danni Zuralow led the Golden Bears in scoring with four points (3 goals, 1 assists) and sophomore teammate Madeleine Dale added a hat trick with three goals. Cal's record fell to 5-5, while the two-time defending NCAA champion Wildcats improved to 9-1.
The Bears allowed a season-high 43 shots to Northwestern, which allowed 13 to Cal. The Wildcats also had the edge in ground balls, 19-12, and draw controls, 20-11. Cal scored on three of five free-position shots.
Northwestern's Hannah Nielsen led all scorers with eight points (5, 3).
Senior midfielder Kristen Kjellman, the nation's top player in 2006, scored the day's first goal 30 seconds into the game to give NU a 1-0 lead. Dale tied the match at 1-1 off senior midfielder Liz Reifsnyder's assist at 1:01.
But Hannah Nielsen and Meredith Frank each scored two goals as the Wildcats went on a 7-0 run to take an 8-1 lead at the 11:03 mark.
Cal reeled off the next four goals, capped by Zuralow's strike off a free-position shot at 15:35, to get within 8-5 of the host.
Northwestern then scored the final four goals of the half to take a 12-5 lead into the break.
Zuralow scored twice and Dale collected one goal in the second half, but the Wildcats outscored Cal, 10-3, over the final 30 minutes to win, 22-8.
The Bears, who had a 0-4 record on their now completed road trip, return to Berkeley to host Oregon at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, at Memorial Stadium.
