STANFORD, Calif. -
California junior Alysia Johnson won the women's 800-meter run and junior teammate Ed Wright won the men's high jump on the final day of the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford campus. The 16th-ranked Cal women finished in eighth place overall with 54.33 points, while the Cal men took ninth place with 56 points.
Arizona State won the women's side of the competition with 158 points, host Stanford was second (134.33) and UCLA was third (118.50). On the men's side, Oregon (114) won the team title, with Arizona State (111) second ad USC (110) third.
Johnson's winning 800 time of 2:01.74, an NCAA regional qualifier, is the second fastest of her career behind the school-record 2:01.48 she ran to win the 800 in the California Collegiate Challenge on April 28. Wright, meanwhile, tied his lifetime-best jump of 7-3 (2.21 meters), another regional qualifier, with his victory at Pac-10s.
Wright and Johnson's conference titles are Cal's first since the 2005 season, when the Bears also won two Pac-10 crowns (Paul Teinert, men's javelin, and Chloe Jarvis, women's 800). Johnson's win also represents Cal's second women's 800 title at Pac-10s, though Louise Romo won the 800 in 1986 when Cal competed in the Northern Pacific Conference.
Johnson's Pac-10 men's high-jump title is Cal's fourth, though Cal also won the men's high jump twice in the Pac-8 Conference and five times in the Pacific Coast Conference.
In all, Cal collected 14 regional qualifiers on Sunday, including junior David Torrence's 3:47.05 he ran to take second place in the men's 1,500-meter run final, junior Cassandra Strickland's 42-8 (13.0 meters) she jumped to take second in the women's triple jump final, sophomore Artensia Young's 40-6.75 (12.36) she notched to take ninth in the women's triple jump and sophomore Francis Gadayan's regional-qualifying 1:50.10 that he ran to take third in the men's 800 final.

Other top performances for the Bears included junior Thomas Mack's regional-qualifying 13.94 he ran to take fourth place and sophomore Jordan Paul's 14.24 he ran to place eighth in the men's 110-meter hurdles final; sophomore Evelyn Smith's regional-qualifying time of 1:00.56 to take eighth in the women's 400-meter hurdles final; sophomore Emilee Strot's regional-qualifying throw of 143-3 (43.67) to capture seventh place; and the Cal women's regional-qualifying time of 3:39.07 that gave them sixth place in the 4x400-meter relay final.
