DAVIDSON, N.C. -
California got late goals from junior midfielder Ashley Glosz and senior forward Jennifer Crane to secure a 2-0 victory over NorPac Conference foe Davidson College on Thursday night. The Golden Bears improved their record to 2-1 (1-0 NorPac), while the Wildcats fell to 3-2 (1-2).
Glosz scored off a penalty stroke in the 62nd minute, while Crane scored in the 63rd.
The Bears outshot Davidson, 23-4, but Wildcats goalkeeper Christa Goeka made 10 saves to keep her team in the match.
"It was one of those games where there's another stellar performance by the other team's goalkeeper," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "We're taking much better shots. We're executing very well. Sometimes you go through these spells where they don't fall.
"We did step up from the last game. The extra work we did after not having a game last week paid off. My focus for the weekend was to play to our potential and not just play well enough to get a win. The stats don't reflect it that much, but we built the play well, passed well and when we did counterattack we handled that well."
Cal senior Liz Braasch played the whole way in goal and made two saves.
A series of shots by the Bears and saves by Goeka preceded the penalty stroke, which Glosz converted at 61:16.
Cal junior midfielder Carolina Bistue set up Crane's goal at 62:51 to cap the scoring.
The Bears play two more games against conference opponents in Davidson, with 1 p.m. ET games against Appalachian State on Saturday and Radford on Sunday on the neutral ground of Davidson's Belk Turf Field.
