Senior forward Jennifer Crane scored 12 seconds into the match and later tacked on another goal and an assist to lead California to a 6-2 non-conference victory over Pacific on a rainy Friday night at Maxwell Family Field. The Golden Bears improved their record to 5-1, while Pacific fell to 1-7.
"One of the things we wanted to do tonight is make sure we kept building on the weekend," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "I consider Pacific as always dangerous. They actually played quite well, but we just stepped up our offense.
"We love this field. It's a fast field. Home-field advantage is real."
Kim Keyawa led the Tigers with two goals, while junior defender Christina McGrath added one goal, one assist and one defensive save for the Bears. Cal senior goalkeeper Liz Braasch made four saves to preserve the win.
Crane's first goal put Cal on top 1-0, but Keyawa's first goal, in the 12th minute, tied the match at 1-1. A goal by sophomore forward Kellie York, who was assisted by Crane, gave the lead back to Cal at 2-1 in the 20th minute.
"Jenny had a great game," Onstead said. "She came close to having three or four goals. She was on a roll. We're going to let her keep leading that way. It's great."
In the 31st minute, Crane, assisted by McGrath, pushed the score to 3-1 with her second goal of the night. Cal took that lead info halftime.
Freshman forward Natalie Nurnberg, assisted by junior midfielder Ashley Glosz, scored in the 54th minute and McGrath, set up by junior midfielder Carolina Bistue, gave Cal its biggest lead at 5-1 in the 56th minute.
Hayley Hull set up Keyawa's second goal, in the 61st minute to make the score 5-2. Cal sophomore Caitlin Byrne, assisted by junior defender Rachel Moffitt struck in the 66th minute to give Cal its 6-2 win.
"Rocky [Moffitt] played outstanding in the backfield," Onstead said. "She's really making good decisions, really controlling the game well. We've got one on the frontline and one on the backline who are handling the game quite well."
Cal next plays Stanford in a NorPac Conference match at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Maxwell Family Field.
