NORFOLK, Va. -
Ashley Glosz scored the deciding goal in No. 15 California's 3-2 win over Old Dominion on Wednesday, giving the Golden Bears a 3-1 lead in the 47th minute with her 10th goal of the year at the Powhaten Sports Complex. Cal outshot the Lady Monarchs, 17-3, though goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll kept Old Dominion in the game with eight saves. The Bears' record improved to 10-2 after the non-conference victory, while ODU fell to 6-8.
ODU scored on two of its three shots, and Cal senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche saved the other one. It was a tight game, despite the shot disparity.
"I'm a little surprised at that stat," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "It was a very close game. We had Gwen Belomy off the field for a little bit and were playing a man down. It was pretty exciting."
Senior forward Katie Knoche put the Bears on the scoreboard with her seventh goal of the season at the 7:23 mark, assisted by senior forward Kellie York's penalty corner and senior defender Rachel Moffitt's stick stop.
"We went out the early one, which is great, on our first corner," Onstead said. "It's always good to set the tone like that. It gave my team a little boost, a little confidence. We had an aggressive game plan in terms of pressing when they brought the ball out of the back, and we did very well with that. We generated a lot of out chances out of that. But as a quality team does, they were countering. That's the most pressure the defense has been under to date, and they handled it really well, which gives us confidence going forward."
Sami Richardson, who led ODU in scoring today with three points, tied the game at 1-1 with her goal at 27:06. Katelyn Smither assisted on the goal.
The game stay tied at halftime.
Cal broke that tie soon after halftime, as sophomore forward Natalie Nurnberg scored an unassisted goal at 38:17 to give the Bears a 2-1 lead. The scoring play began with a set play going into the circle. The ball eventually deflected off of Driscoll to Nurnberg, who scored her sixth goal of the season.
At 46:23, Glosz put away her team-leading 10th goal of the season, firing a diving backhanded goal at top speed past Driscoll. Cal led, 3-1. Belomy had left the field with a yellow card before that goal, at 46:14.
Less than a minute later, with Cal still one player down, Richardson set up Amanda Bieber for a goal, and the score was 3-2.
But Cal did not allow another shot.
Onstead praised many of her players, including the three goalscorers, York and senior defender Carolina Bistue.
"Caro had a really good game at right half, making some key defensive plays under pressure," Onstead said. "For me it was one of the most complete team efforts. Everybody was on the same page, with people stepping up at separate times. There was a really good purpose. We didn't have that moment where maybe a younger team would've gotten on their heels a little bit. They played right through to the end, which is great."
Cal stays in Virginia for its next game, a non-conference match against Delaware at a neutral site in Richmond, Va., at 10 a.m. PT on Friday, Oct. 17. The Bears conclude their road trip with a non-conference game against No. 3 Wake Forest at 9 a.m. OT on Sunday, Oct. 19, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
