WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
Fifteenth-ranked California suffered its first shutout of the season at the hands of No. 3 Wake Forest, losing, 1-0, to the Demon Deacons on Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Golden Bears, whose record fell to 11-3 after the non-conference loss. Wake Forest now has a 14-2 record.
Senior defender Carolina Bistue led the Bears in shots with three. Cal senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche made six saves, as Cal completed its latest road trip with a 2-1 record.
The Demon Deacons had the advantage in shots, 12-7, and penalty corners, 8-6, against the Bears, who lost by a one-goal margin in each of their three defeats this season. Crystal Duffield made four saves for the hosts.
Cal head coach Shellie Onstead was happy with her team's performance.
"I am," she said. "It was a really high-speed second half, with a lot of counter attacks in both directions. I'm happy with our fitness and our speed. They are one of the fastest teams we've played. We took the ball at them when we had the ball, and we hung with them when they had the ball."
Wake scored the game's lone goal at the 15:40 mark. Demon Deacons midfielder Minou Gimbrere passed from the top of the circle to teammate Aileen Davis, who shot wide towards Cal's goal. Michelle Kasold tapped the ball past Knoche for the game winner.
Cal also lost a one-goal game to Wake last year, when the Bears held a 3-2 second-half lead but eventually fell, 4-3, to the Demon Deacons in Berkeley.
"The difference last year was we got some balls in the net," Onstead said. "We played them better this time. It was pretty tight all the way around. We didn't play as good a first half as the second. That made the difference."
The Bears had their share of scoring chances in today's game, including senior Ashley Glosz going one on one with Duffield in the first half. But the senior midfielder/forward couldn't get a shot off.
"We had more chances than they did, if you count chances and not literal shots," Onstead said, pointing to a chance on a penalty corner and other fast-break opportunities.
On Friday, Oct. 24, the Bears play the Bears play their last home game of the season when they host rival Stanford in a non-conference match at 1:30 p.m. at Maxwell Family Field in Berkeley. Cal, which has already clinched the top seed in the Nov. 6-8 NorPac Conference Tournament, plays its final conference game of the regular season when it battles the Cardinal on Nov. 1 in Stanford, Calif.
