BERKELEY - The No. 22 California women's soccer team overcame an early 0-2 deficit to tie Arizona State, 2-2, in double overtime on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Freshman forward Katie Benz and senior midfielder/forward Nikki Schrey scored Cal's goals at 75:48 and 79:55, respectively. The Golden Bears outshot the Sun Devils, 20-7. Cal now sits at 9-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the Pac-10 while ASU is 7-4-4 and 1-2-1 in conference play.

"This is something that we have been searching for all season long," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "In the tight games that we've lost, we've given up goals late. For us to go down early and come back the way we did demonstrates that the players have a great deal of character. I'm very proud of them."

Arizona State scored first when Carly Kallas fired a 23-yard shot over Cal goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini. Karin Volpe put one through with a shot into the lower corner at 25:26 off an assist from Erin Seto. The Bears went into the locker room trailing, 0-2, and held a 7-4 shot advantage at the close of the first half.

Cal opened the second half with shots from freshmen defender/forward Miranda White and forward Mariam Azimi. Benz got Cal on the board at 75:48 for her first goal as a Golden Bear. Benz had a second chance shot off the assist from Azimi, and Benz's shot spun out of the ASU goalie's control.

Schrey tied the game and prevented the loss for the Bears by firing a shot that hit the goalpost and deflected into the goal with 10:05 to play in regulation. Neither team was able to score in overtime though Cal had five shots in the two overtime periods.

Redshirt freshman goalie Jorden LaFontaine-Kussman made two key saves between the posts. Benz and Azimi paced the Bears with three shots each.

Cal hosts Arizona on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Edwards Stadium.
