LOS ANGELES - The No. 25 California women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to No. 10 USC on Friday afternoon at SC's McAlister Field. The Golden Bears had seven shots on goal and limited the Trojans to four but still lost the conference match. Cal drops to 10-6-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Pac-10 Conference while USC improves to 13-3-1 and 3-2-1 Pac-10.
The Friday, Oct. 31 game between No. 25 California and No. 10 USC will be broadcast via a tape delay for the week following the game. "I'm proud of the way we played today against a very good USC team," Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. "We were beaten by two fantastic free kicks, but we certainly had chances of our own that we did not capitalize on."
The Bears got their first offensive attack at 10:23 with a shot that went wide from sophomore forward Lisa Kevorkian, who returned to the pitch after sitting out several games with an injury. From there, sophomore forward Alex Morgan took a powerful shot that forced the Trojan goalkeeper Kristin Olsen to make a save in the 14th minute.
USC scored with 20 minutes to play in the first half off a free kick from Ashley Nick which went around the Cal wall into the left side of the goal. Cal freshman goalie Jorden LaFontaine-Kussmann made two saves to prevent any further Trojan attacks. Morgan took one final shot on goal, forcing another Olsen save, at the close of the first period, and the Bears went into the break down, 0-1.
The Trojans tacked on another goal off a free kick at 53:32, this time from Ashli Sandoval, to distance themselves, 2-0. Kevorkian responded less than a minute later with a shot on goal that was saved by Olsen. The Bears had four shots on goal in the final 25 minutes of play, all of which were saved by Olsen. Junior midfielder Katie Oakes, senior midfielder/forward Nikki Schrey, Morgan and freshman forward Natasha Richardson all contributed shots but were unsuccessful, and the Bears lost, 2-0.
Morgan paced Cal with three shots. LaFontaine-Kussmann grabbed two saves and split time with junior Gina Pellegrini. The Bears play No. 3 UCLA on Sunday at noon in Los Angeles.
