BERKELEY -
Danni Zuralow scored five goals and Alex Tickner scored the goal that put California ahead for good in the Golden Bears' 11-9 MPSF victory over rival Stanford on a rainy Saturday in Memorial Stadium. The win evens Cal's record at 1-1 and gives the Bears a 1-0 record in conference play, while Stanford moves to 3-2 (2-1).
"I'm happy with the win," Theresa Sherry said of her first win as Cal's head coach. "We still have a lot of things to work on. As always it was a battle with Stanford, mentally and physically. Both teams really go at it. It doesn't matter on paper who's supposed to win.
"I was happy with the improvement in the second half and that our players really stepped up and finished it off. I thought that was really important for us going into our next few games."
Stanford scored twice within the first two and half minutes, taking a 2-0 lead on unassisted goals by Megan McClain and Sarah Flynn. The Cardinal scored three of the game's first four goals, with Cal junior attacker Madeleine Dale striking for the Bears at the 4:02 mark and Stanford's Dana Lindsay scoring at 5:45 to give the Cardinal 3-1 lead.
Dale and Lindsay each wound up with a hat trick for the game.
Zuralow sparked a Cal comeback, scoring at 6:13 and 9:11 to tie the game at 3-3. Dale collected her second goal off a free-position shot at 20:55 to put Cal ahead at 4-3.
But Lindsay, at 25:25, and Karen Nesbitt, at 28:06, later scored to give Stanford a 5-4 lead at halftime.
The Cardinal scored two of the first three goals in the second half - goals by Lindsay and Claire Hubbard sandwiched a goal by Zuralow - to take a 7-5 lead at 34:09.
Cal proceeded to score six of the game's final eight goals. Goals by Zuralow, Tickner, Dale, sophomore Alyse Kennedy and Tickner gave Cal a 10-8 lead. Stanford's Megan McClain converted a free-position shot to cut the lead to 10-9, but Zuralow's unassisted strike at 25:59 clinched the victory for Cal.
The Bears close their homestand with a non-conference match against Ohio State at 11 a.m. on Sunday, March 2, at Memorial Stadium.
