Feb. 9, 2008
Box Score
Palm Springs, CA -
California freshmen Valerie Arioto and Sanoe Kekahuna combined to produce five RBI and three runs to help boost the Golden Bear softball team past Winthrop, 5-1, in the second day of the Cathedral City Classic hosted by Oregon State.
Cal (2-1) faces New Mexico State later tonight.
Arioto went 2-for-3, including a triple, and four RBI, while Kekahuna went 1-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored. Senior Katie Vickers notched two hits on three plate appearances with a run.
Marissa Drewrey (2-0) overpowered the Winthrop hitters all day, scattering seven hits to go along with a career-high 14 strikeouts.
Cal unlocked a scoreless with a three-run second inning, courtesy of a bases loaded, two out triple by Arioto to clear the bases.
After Winthrop scored its lone run in the bottom of the third, the Bears came right back with a run in the top of the fourth, thanks to an Arioto RBI single to left-center field that scored Kekahuna.
Kekahuna led off the sixth inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. It was the first home run of the season for the Bears.
