BERKELEY -
Brittany Aungier scored a career-high six points to lead California to a 14-8 non-conference victory over Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. The senior attacker collected four goals and two assists for the Golden Bears, who improved their record to 3-4. The Bobcats evened their record at 2-2.
Cal head coach Theresa Sherry saw some improvement in the Bears, who snapped a two-game losing streak after a few good practices this week.
"We wanted everyone to be more of a threat off the challenge, everybody to be a threat off the cut, and I think that was much more evident today," Sherry said. "We actually started using those cutters, too, and got six assisted goals. It was a lot better today."
Tiffany Manzi paced Quinnipiac with three points (2 goals, 1assist).
Cal took a 2-0 lead on goals by junior attacker Madeleine Dale, at 1:17, and Aungier, at 3:23, but Kelly Bruneau and Katy Delagi scored to tie the game at 2-2 with Delagi's strike at 5:49.
Junior defender Sam Price scored her seventh goal of the season, at 8:50, and senior attacker Danni Zuralow scored on an eight-meter attempt at 11:16 to put the Bears ahead at 4-2.
Ashley Valentine converted her own eight-meter attempt at 11:24 to pull the Bobcats within one goal at 4-3.
But Quinnipiac would not get any closer to the Bears, who tallied eight-meter goals by Aungier, at 16:12, and sophomore defender DennaFaye Herald, at 16:22, to claim a 6-3 lead.
Bruneau and Delagi sandwiched goals around Aungier's third of the half, and Cal took a 7-5 lead into halftime.
Cal freshman midfielder Emily Abbood assisted on Zuralow's team-leading 19th goal of the year at 31:57 to start a 3-0 Cal run to start the second half. Goals by Dale and senior midfielder Cristen Andrews gave the Bears a 10-5 lead at 36:41.
Junior midfielder Elizabeth "T" Jahp, set up by sophomore midfielder Alyse Kennedy, ended the scoring with her first goal of the year, at 59:50, to give Cal its 14-8 win.
Cal concludes its three-game homestand when it hosts George Washington at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at Memorial Stadium.
