Sacramento -
Sophomore Marissa Drewrey pitched a seven-hit shutout to help lead the California Golden Bears to a 2-0 upset victory over No. 19 Ohio State in the second day of the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.
Cal (23-9) has won five games in a row and 15 of its last 17 since Feb. 23. This was also the second victory over a ranked team this season for the Bears.
Drewrey, who improved to 11-4 in the circle, also recorded 10 strikeouts, while just walking two batters. She pitched her way out of two early jams in the first and second inning as Ohio State left a total of five runners on base, including three in the second. In fact Drewrey allowed just three more hits after the second inning.
The Bears claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after Bernice Masaniai crossed home plate after Katie Vickers reached base on a fielding miscue by the Buckeyes.
Cal tacked on another run in the bottom of the third inning when Sanoe Kekahuna's RBI single to left field plated Erika Racklin, who reached base on an error by the Ohio State short stop.
The win helped Cal atone for last year's 10-7 loss to the Buckeyes on Feb. 24.
