BERKELEY - California dropped a 10-7 non-conference match to visiting Ohio State on Sunday in Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears, whose record falls to 1-2, last held a lead of 3-1 over the Buckeyes (3-1) in the first half, but OSU's defense and goalkeeper Kristen Gilwee made it a challenging afternoon for Cal the rest of the way.
"We got frustrated," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "We hit a lot of posts. The goalie made some good saves. That period of time when we weren't scoring, we had a lot of frustration and gave up some bad looks on defense. We kind of fell out of our game plan and made it tough for ourselves. We dug too big a hole to fight out of, even though we made that run at the end."
Senior attacker Brittany Aungier led Cal with three points from three assists. Ohio State's Kristen Slahor led all scorers with five points (2 goals, 3 assists). Gilwee made 12 saves for the Buckeyes.
Junior attacker Madeleine Dale scored just 23 seconds into the game to give Cal a 1-0 lead. Maghan Beaudrault evened the game with a strike at 1:00. Bears sophomore midfielders Alyse Kennedy and senior Cristen Andrews scored at 4:44 and 11:07, respectively, to give Cal its 3-1 lead.
But the Buckeyes' defense and Gilwee's play stymied the Bears much of the rest of the way - Cal was 0-6 on free-position shots and Gilwee made nine saves in the first half. OSU outscored Cal, 5-1, the rest of the first half to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
The Buckeyes scored the first four goals of the second half and claimed a 10-4 lead on Rachel Hawes' goal at 52:09.
Cal then scored the game's final three goals - on strikes by Kennedy (54:04), Dale (56:41) and sophomore Alex Tickner (57:51), the latter on the Bears' only free-position goal of the day - to get within three goals of OSU at 10-7. But Cal did not record another shot.
The Bears next travel to Southern California to compete in the East West Challenge. They play Temple at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, at Torrey Pines High School and then play No. 10 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
