Honolulu -
Sophomore Marissa Drewrey and her California Golden Bear teammates avenged their 8-0 loss to No. 13 Northwestern on Friday with a 1-0 win over the Wildcats today in the final day of the Bank of Hawaii Invitational.
No. 25 Cal, who improved to 29-10 on the season, has won 21 of its last 24 games since Feb. 23.
Drewrey was stellar in the circle, allowing just six hits for her sixth shutout of the season. Drewrey, who improved to 17-4, also struck out two batters and walked five in seven innings of work.
The Bears scored their lone run in the bottom of the first inning when Bernice Masaniai connected on a two out infield single that plated Gina Leomiti from third base. Leomiti reached base after she punched a double to right field with one out.
Northwestern had a major scoring threat in the top of the fifth inning with runners on first and second with one out. Northwestern chose to sacrifice the runner on second base over to third. With two outs, Cal elected to intentionally walk Michelle Batts to get to Nicole Pauly. With two strikes against Pauly, Drewrey induced a groundout to end the threat.
The Wildcats had one last chance in the top of the seventh with runners on first and second with two outs. Again Drewrey settled down and got Pauly to foul out to end the game.
