The 23rd-ranked California Golden Bears evened their Pac-10 record at 1-1 after a 3-1 win over the tenth-ranked Arizona Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. Cal and Arizona battle again tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
Cal improved to 32-11, while Arizona fell to 24-9, 1-1 in the Pac-10. The win also helped Cal snap its three-game losing streak to the Wildcats. The Bears also improved to 30-1 when leading after four innings, and 19-0 when leading after six innings. Cal is also 28-2 when scoring three or more runs.
Marissa Drewrey bounced back from her loss to Arizona State on Friday, with a solid effort in the circle. She only allowed one run - which was a solo home run by Arizona's Jenae Leles in the top of the first inning - with four strikeouts in seven innings of work. It was her 20th win and 20th complete game of the season. Additionally, Drewrey has allowed just five earned runs in her last 31.2 innings pitched.
Bernice Masaniai provided the big bat for the Bears in the third inning when her double to left field scored both Erika Racklin and Valerie Arioto to put Cal in the lead for good. It was the eighth time this season that Masaniai has had two RBI in a single game. Masaniai, who is hitting .331, ranks second on the team in doubles with 11 on the year, while currently owning a five-game hitting streak.
Gina Leomiti extended her hitting streak to five games as well after notching a base knock in the fifth inning. Savannah Hensley motored from first base to score her eleventh run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning after Vernae Sevilla punched a double to center field, putting Cal up 3-1.
Arizona's Taryne Mowatt suffered the loss in the circle to fall to 13-7 on the season. The All-American senior hurler also walked three and struck out five in six innings.
