Arizona Escapes Berkeley with a 5-2 Win over California

Berkeley - The tenth-ranked Arizona Wildcats rallied from a 2-0 deficit and escaped Levine-Fricke Field with a 5-2 win over the 23rd-ranked California Golden Bears on a sunny Sunday afternoon in front of a jam-packed 510 patrons in attendance.

Cal, who falls to 32-12, 1-2 in Pac-10 play, travels to Washington and UCLA Apr. 4-6. Cal and Arizona resume the third game of its series on Thursday, May 8 in Tucson. Cal defeated UA on Saturday by a 3-1 margin.

Sophomore pitcher Marissa Drewrey gave a valiant effort in the circle, surrendering three runs on six hits and seven strikeouts. For the weekend against No. 1 Arizona State on Friday and two games against the Wildcats (on Saturday and Sunday), Drewrey threw 20.2 innings, yielding eight earned runs with 16 strikeouts. Against Arizona today, Drewrey held the Wildcats scoreless for five innings. She is 20-7 on the season with a 1.59 ERA and 199 strikeouts. Sophomore Brittany LaRosa was inserted in the Arizona half of the seventh inning and allowed two runs on five hits.

Gina Leomiti extended her hitting streak to six games after launching her sixth home run of the season - a solo shot over the right field wall in the third inning which gave Cal a 2-0 advantage.

Cal jumped on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead after Erika Racklin, who reached on a walk, matriculated around the bases and eventually scored from third base on a deep sacrifice fly by Bernice Masaniai.

Arizona (25-9) finally got to Drewrey in the top of the sixth inning when K'Lee Arredondo delivered a key two-run double to knot the game at 2-2. The Wildcats added another run after Jenae Leles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 5-2 lead, before Cal gave one last effort for a seventh inning rally. Racklin reached base with a one out single and moved to second after Leomiti was issued a walk by Taryne Mowatt, who came in for UA in the fifth inning. One batter later, Masaniai drew a walk to load the bases. However Mowatt induced a strikeout and a pop up to end the game.

Cal's next home game is April 11 vs. Oregon.
