SAN DIEGO - Danni Zuralow scored four goals to lead California to a 10-7 victory over Temple in the first game of the East West Challenge on Thursday night at Torrey Pines High School. The non-conference win improves Cal's record to 2-2, while Temple falls to 1-1.

Sophomore midfielder Alyse Kennedy collected six draw controls and six players - freshman Nellie Hayes, junior Madeleine Dale, senior Brittany Aungier, senior Cristen Andrews, junior Sam Price and senior Mary Downs - scored one goal each for the Golden Bears.

The Bears dominated the game in the first half, snaring most of the draw controls as they took an 8-2 lead. Zuralow, a senior attacker, scored three of her goals in the first 30 minutes.

"The draw controls were huge," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "Those stats were our best asset. Overall in the first half we played better in the attack and defensively. The attack struggled in the second half."

The Owls turned the tide in the second half, closing to within three goals.

"In the second half they were extremely patient offensively and we weren't as patient," Zuralow said.

The play of junior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson, who played the whole 60 minutes, kept Cal afloat.

"Morgan had a phenomenal game," Sherry said. "We had some little breakdowns in the defense in the second half, but she came up with some big saves. That gives us some momentum going into our next game.

Cal completes its stay in the East West Challenge when it takes on No. 11 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
