Cal Falls to Nevada, 10-2
March 8, 2008
Box Score
Hayward -
Cal (18-9) had its five-game winning streak snapped after a 10-2 loss to Nevada in the second day of the NIST at the Alden E. Oliver Sports Park in Hayward on Saturday. Cal defeated San Jose State, 15-4 in six innings in the earlier game of the day to earn the split.
The Bears conclude tournament play tomorrow versus Northern Iowa at 10 a.m.
Valerie Arioto, Gina Leomiti, Bernice Masaniai and Sanoe Kekahuna accounted for all four of Cal's hits on the evening. The pitching staff struggled for the first time in five games, as the duo of Arioto and Brittany LaRosa allowed a combined 10 runs on six hits. LaRosa suffered the loss in the circle to fall to 3-3.
Nevada staked claim to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, before the Bears tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the third stanza courtesy of Leomiti's two-run home run over the center field wall.
That was all the Bears could do offensively as Nevada tallied eight runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-2 lead. The game was called in the fifth due to the tournament run rule in place.
