ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Senior defender Carolina Bistue recorded the first multi-goal game of her career with two goals to lead No. 20 California to a 5-1 victory over Northwestern on Sunday at Michigan's Phyllis Ocker Field. The Golden Bears, who also got goals from Kellie York, Gwen Belomy and Ashley Glosz, improved their record to 7-2 after the non-conference win. Northwestern fell to 5-6.
Cal won both games it played in Ann Arbor during the Michigan road trip, including its victory over host Michigan 3-2 in overtime on Sept. 25. Sandwiched in between trips to Ocker Field was a 3-2 overtime setback against Michigan State in East Lansing.
"I'm happy to be 2-1," Cal head coach Shellie Onstead said. "That was my first goal. I certainly would have been happier at 3-0, but to go 2-1 on an all-Big Ten trip is good."
Against Northwestern, Bistue scored on direct shots after Cal penalty corners in the 10th and 39th minutes, with York and senior defender Rachel Moffitt earning assists on each goal.
The defender has now scored a career-high four goals on the season. Bistue's previous career-high goals total was two last year.
Another penalty corner set up York's goal in the 52nd minute, when she stuck the ball past NU goalkeeper Emily Kyle from the left post to give Cal a 3-0 lead. Bistue assisted on York's goal and was the game's leading scorer with two goals and one assist.
Belomy, a senior midfielder, was substituted in about a minute before she set up a goal by Bears sophomore forward Natalie Nurnberg, carrying the ball into the circle and dishing to Nurnberg on the left side. Nurnberg tallied her fourth goal of the season with her strike in the 61st minute.
Senior midfielder/forward Ashley Glosz tacked on Cal's fifth goal of the game in the 67th minute, taking the ball at the top of the circle, spinning and converting a backhanded shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
Cal senior goalkeeper Kelly Knoche made five saves and almost earned a shutout, but a penalty corner set up Northwestern's lone goal as the game ended. Courtney Plaster scored on a direct shot with no time remaining after assists from Annie Bosslet and Stephanie Fortson to make the final score 5-1.
The Bears outshot the Wildcats by one, 12-11, and tied Northwestern on penalty corners, 11-11. Kyle made three saves for NU.
The Bears return home for their next game, a NorPac Conference match against Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Maxwell Family Field. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. It was originally slated for a 1 p.m. start, but the time was pushed back due to the 12:30 p.m. start to the Cal-Arizona State football game on the same day in Berkeley.
