No. 10/13 California lost a 1-0 decision to No. 2/4 UCLA on Friday night at Drake Stadium. The Bruins' David Estrada scored the game's lone goal with a shot from the top of the Golden Bears' box in the 15th minute. The Bears' record fell to 8-4-0 (2-2-0 Pac-10) after the conference loss. UCLA improved to 7-1-2 (2-0-2).
Junior midfielder Hector Jimenez had perhaps Cal's best chance to tie the match, with a 79th-minute effort that UCLA goalkeeper Brian Perk stopped with a diving save.
UCLA outshot Cal 19-8 for the game, including 12-1 in the first half, but sophomore goalkeeper David Bingham kept the Bears in the match with eight saves.
Cal tied the Bruins in second-half shots, 7-7, and forced Perk to make all three of his saves in the final 45 minutes.
Junior midfielder Demitrius Omphroy took a team-high three shots for the Bears, producing a save out of Perk in the 53rd minute. Cal junior midfielder Davis Paul also put a shot on goal in the 65th minute.
The Bears played in front of a crowd of 1,807, the second-largest attendance for a Cal game this season and the biggest crowd to watch Cal play on the West Coast this year.
A crowd of 3,710 watched Cal play at Maryland on Sept. 6.
Cal continues Pac-10 play with a game at San Diego State at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.
