Nurnberg and Shimojima Score, But Bears Fall to Iowa, 3-2

Behind two goals from Tricia Dean, Iowa defeated California, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City, Iowa. Junior Natalie Nurnberg and redshirt freshman Megan Shimojima scored the Golden Bears' goals. Nurnberg now leads the team with five goals. Cal drops to 3-7 on the season, while the Hawkeyes improve to 4-6.
The Bears got on the board first with Shimojima's goal in the fourth minute off of a deflection. It was her first score of the season. Redshirt freshman Claire Dougherty earned the assist. Iowa didn't wait long to tie the game. In the eighth minute, Dean scored her first goal of the afternoon with a shot from the top of the circle. Dean led all players with five shots.
Iowa's Chelsea Miller gave the Hawkeyes a 2-1 lead at halftime with her goal in the 20th minute. Miller scored off a deflection. Shortly after halftime, Dean scored her second goal of the day, and the sixth of the season, in the 40th minute. Dean scored off of a penalty corner. Leslie Pyle notched the assist
Trailing 3-1, the Bears were able to get one back with Nurnberg's goal in the 45th minute. Nurnberg scored on a shot right in front of the cage.
Cal keeper Maddie Hand allowed two goals in the first half, while Haleh Nourani gave up Iowa's third goal in the second half. Nourani tallied three saves. Iowa's keeper, Kathleen Mcgraw also had three saves.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Bears, 16-8, and Iowa earned eight corners to Cal's four.
The Bears face No. 17 Northwestern on Tuesday at noon (PT) to conclude the Midwest road trip.
