LONG BEACH, Calif. -
Sixth-ranked California posted nine NCAA B qualifying times and sits in second place in the team standings at the Toshiba Classic on Thursday, the first day of the meet held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Freshman Caitlin Leverenz took second in the 200-yard individual medley in an NCAA B time of 1:58.34 that ranks seventh on the Golden Bears' all-time list. In addition to Leverenz, the Bears' 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay, senior Heather White (200 IM), junior Hannah Wilson in the 50-yard freestyle and, in the 500-yard freestyle, senior Lauren Boyle, sophomore Sara Isakovic, sophomore Shelley Harper and junior Katie Kastes all collected NCAA B, or conditional, qualifying times.
Cal, with 379 points, trails Stanford (492), which won all five events on the first day of the meet.
"I thought the girls did a really nice job today," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "I was really pleased with how we performed. We did a little training session in the ocean this morning as a warm-up. Now, getting competition, swimming in heats, finals and in multiple races, it's really important when we look at where we are right now so we can continue to evaluate and make some adjustments."
White joined Leverenz in the top five of the 200 IM, finishing fifth in a time of 2:01.17.
The Cal quartet of sophomore Liv Jensen, Wilson, senior Amanda Larson and junior Erica Dagg swam a time of 1:31.13 for its second-place finish in the 200-free relay, the first women's event at the meet, which includes a men's competition.
Bears filled the third through sixth spots in the 500 free. Boyle, normally a distance swimmer, was third in the 500 in a time of 4:47.82. Isakovic was fourth (4:48.98), Harper was fifth (4:49.61) and Kastes was sixth (4:50.00).
Cal collected two top-10 results in the 50 free, with Wilson placing fourth (22.09) and Jensen taking fifth (23.08).
In the final race of the night, the 400-medley relay, the Cal foursome of Dagg, Leverenz, junior Amanda Sims and Wilson swam an NCAA B time of 3:41.03 to take second.
Friday, the meet's second day, will include seven events: the 200-medley relay, 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 800-free relay.
