BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Patrick Christopher scored 21 points, Jerome Randle added 18 points, seven rebounds and eight assists and California rallied to beat Stanford 82-75 on Saturday afternoon.
Jorge Gutierrez had 10 points and eight rebounds and made a key shot with 1:37 remaining to help complete the comeback for the Golden Bears (19-6, 8-4 Pac-10) on a day Cal celebrated its 100th anniversary of men's basketball.
The Bears trailed by 22 in the first half and were down by 14 at halftime before opening the second half with a 16-3 run to get back into the game.
Landry Fields scored 16 points to pace five Stanford players in double figures. The Cardinal (15-8, 4-8) made just one basket over the final eight minutes and had only one 3-pointer in the second half after making nine in the first half.
Stanford came out shooting a blistering pace from the floor, making 19-of-28 shots (67.9%) overall and 9-of-12 from three-point range in the first half. But after going up, 47-25, with 4:33 left in the opening frame, the Cardinal managed just one more field goal until the break, allowing Cal to close the period on an 11-3 run to get within 50-36.
The Bears opened the second half with a three-guard lineup that included Gutierrez on the perimeter. The 6-3 freshman provided the spark Cal needed and finished the day with five steals - most for a Bear in 3 1/2 seasons.
Cal scored the first eight ponts of the second half and didn't allow Stanford to make a shot from the field until nearly five minutes in. A layup by Harper Kamp brought the Bears within one point at 53-52 with 13:59.
However, Cal did not take the lead until Randle scored seven straight points to push the Bears ahead, 72-71, with 3:04 to go. Christopher followed with a three-pointer and Cal sank five free throws in the final 39 seconds to ice the game.
The Bears limited Stanford to just one field goal the final 8:04 and held the Cardinal to 33.3 percent shooting (8-for-24) after their torrid first half.
Cal honored players from its past at each timeout as part of the school's celebration of the 100th season of Golden Bear basketball. At halftime, each of the members of the 1959 NCAA championship team who were in attendance were introduced, and center Darrall Imhoff - an All-American and 1960 Olympic gold medalist - had his No. 40 jersey retired.
