Feb. 20, 2009
Box Score
Palm Springs, Calif. -
The ninth-ranked California softball team recorded its third straight shutout with a 1-0 win over SEC foe Ole Miss at the Cathedral City Classic on Friday. Marissa Drewrey, who was two outs away from a no-hitter, did not allow a walk for her sixth win of the year.
Valerie Arioto supplied the heroics for Cal with a solo home run with one out in the third inning.
Drewrey was masterful in the circle, not giving up a hit until the seventh inning. She added six strikeouts, giving her 51 for the season.
"This was a good start to the tournament for us," said Drewrey. "I really wanted to set the tone for my teammates and I think I did a pretty good job of that. We just want to keep this momentum going and get a few more wins this weekend."
Shannon Thomas, Jamia Reid and Frani Echavarria all had stolen bases versus the Rebels, giving Cal 40 thefts in 10 games thus far.
Cal scratched out five hits off of Ole Miss pitcher Becky Nye and neither team committed an error.
