Cal Baseball Powers Past Santa Clara, 12-2
Feb. 25, 2009
Box Score
SANTA CLARA, CALIF. -
Highlighted by a phenomenal pitching performance by freshman right-hander Matt Flemer in his first collegiate outing, the California baseball team (3-2) dominated Santa Clara, 12-2, in its first road game of the 2009 season, Wednesday, Feb. 25 at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Flemer (1-0) was superb, throwing 6.2 innings with four hits, two runs, no walks and 13 strikeouts. His 13 strikeouts were the most strikeouts by a Cal pitcher since Tyson Ross had 16 strikeouts versus Oral Roberts in 2007. Flemer's debut started out dubious, however, when he gave up a home run to the first batter he faced, Bronco center fielder Matt Long. But after Long's homer, he did not give up another run until the seventh inning while recording his 13 strikeouts without walking a batter.
The Golden Bears were also impressive offensively, pounding out 13 hits against eight different Bronco pitchers, including sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn going a career-high 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI, and freshman Danny Oh, who was 4-for-5 with four RBI.
Cal next travels to Long Beach State for a three-game series, beginning Friday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Blair Field.
Home Runs:
Cal: None.
Santa Clara: Matt Long, solo home run in the first inning.
