Box Score

Fullerton, Calif. - The Auburn Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning and defeated the ninth-ranked Cal softball team, 4-1 in the first day of the DeMarini Tournament hosted by CS Fullerton on Friday. The Bears (11-3) face the Titans later at 6:00 p.m.

Valerie Arioto helped Cal take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when she drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Shannon Thomas walk, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

The Tigers missed a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the third when Amber Harrison was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning. Harrison doubled to open the inning and attempted to score on a single up the middle by Lauren Guzman.

That was all Cal could generate as Auburn pitcher Anna Thompson held the Bears hitless until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Auburn finally got to Cal starting pitcher Marissa Drewrey. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kyndall White notched a single through the right side to plate two runs. The Tigers then added two more runs on a infield error to take the 4-1 lead.

Cal made things interesting in the top of the seventh inning and loaded the bases with one out. But Thompson recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

This was Cal's first ever meeting against Auburn. Drewrey suffered the loss allowing two earned runs on six hits.
