PHILADELPHIA -
Junior midfielder Alex Tickner scored three goals to lead California to an 8-6 victory over Temple on Sunday in the cold at Geasey Field. The Golden Bears evened their record at 3-3. The host Owls dropped to 0-2.
Cal senior goalkeeper Morgan Dyson made seven saves in a complete-game effort, while counterpart Jessica Colucci made 13 saves in 60 minutes for the Owls.
"The game was a battle," Cal head coach Theresa Sherry said. "Our games with Temple usually are going to be a fight. Being on the road, we're happy to get the win and that we're going back to California on a positive note. The Temple goalie played real well. We were struggling to find a rhythm. I'm proud of DennaFaye Herald, Alex Tickner and Morgan Dyson for finding a way to get it done. It was not the prettiest win, but I'm happy to come away with the win on the road.
"It snowed last night about 10 inches, and they plowed the field this morning. It was pretty clear throughout the game but bearable. I'm happy with the girls winning on a chilly day."
Chelsea Rosiek put Temple on the scoreboard first with a goal at 2:29. After a foul by the Owls' Tracy Zimmer, Tickner converted an eight-meter shot at 4:30 to tie the game at 1-1. Rosiek then fouled Tickner, who tallied another eight-meter goal at 5:16 to give Cal a 2-1 lead.
Rosiek assisted on Kelsey Zenuk's strike at 7:41 to tie the match at 2-2.
Freshman Lauren Johnson, making her second career start, pulled the Bears ahead with her fourth goal of the season at 10:53. Cal came close to scoring on its next three shots, with Colucci saving Tickner's shot at 11:41, senior midfielder Ghillie Little hitting the post at 12:37 and senior attacker Sam Price hitting the post at 14:02.
Senior midfielder Elizabeth "T" Jahp scored her fifth goal of the year at 16:02 to give Cal a 4-2 lead.
Temple's Jacqueline Mercer scored at 18:51 and Brittney Hoffman converted an eight-meter shot at 24:30, and the teams went into halftime tied at 4-4.
Cal outshot Temple 15-8 in the first half and 28-17 in the game.
Bears freshman Vail Horn untied the game 1:48 into the second half, after she converted an eight-meter shot. Cal led, 5-4, on Horn's season-high tying 11th goal of the year. Sophomore Emily Abbood scored her third goal of the year at 38:26 to move the Bears ahead by two at 6-4.
The two teams traded goals over the next few minutes, with Temple's Melissa Schweitzer scoring at 40:17 and Cal junior Alyse Kennedy notching her sixth goal of the year at 41:48 to make the scored 7-5. Bears senior attacker Sam Price picked up her fourth assist of the year on Kennedy's goal to give Price a team-leading 15 points (11 goals, 4 assists).
Little set up Tickner's eighth goal of the season at 47:33, and Cal led 8-5.
Neither team scored for nearly 10 minutes, until the Owls' Lindsey Colferai scored at 58:30 to make the score 8-6.
Dyson saved Temple's final shot, a blast by Hoffman at 59:45, and Cal secured the win.
Cal returns to Berkeley for a three-game homestand starting next Saturday, March 8, when the Bears host fellow Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team UC Davis at 1 p.m. at Memorial Field. The Bears then host a pair of nonconference games when they play William and Mary at 3 p.m. on March 11 and Vermont at noon on March 14.
