Cal Baseball Loses to No. 24 Cal Poly, 10-5

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The Cal baseball team fell behind early and was never able to catch up, losing to No. 24-ranked Cal Poly, 10-5, Saturday in the second game of a three-game series at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who did get home runs from freshman left fielder Danny Oh and junior designated hitter Dylan Tonneson, dropped to 9-6, while the Mustangs improved to 10-4. On Friday, Cal had upended Cal Poly, 12-8, in game one of the series. The two teams will play the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday at Evans Diamond.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the second inning off of Bear sophomore right-hander Brian Diemer (1-1, 2.1 innings, four hits, four runs, three walks, one strikeout) on a two-run single by J.J. Thompson and an RBI single by Kyle Smith. Cal responded by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by freshman catcher Chadd Krist and an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn to get within 3-2.

Cal Poly added another run in the top of the third inning on Matt Jensen's sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead, but Oh's solo homer in the fourth inning got the Bears within one run again, 4-3. But the Mustangs pulled away by scoring three runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings (home run from Ryan Lee). Cal did score a run in the seventh inning on a fielder's choice RBI by sophomore first baseman Mark Canha and Tonneson's solo home run in the eighth inning.

The winning pitcher for Cal Poly was left-handed starter Matt Leonard (6.0 innings, eight hits, three runs, two walks, one strikeout). Eric Massingham earned his first save of the season by throwing the final 3.0 innings (one hit, two runs, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts).

Cal junior center fielder Brett Jackson extended his hitting streak to all 15 of the Bears' games this season with a double in the fifth inning. Bear junior right fielder Blake Smith led Cal at the plate by going 2-for-4 and also threw a runner out at the plate from right field in the ninth inning.
