The Cal baseball team jumped out to a 2-0 lead on sophomore first baseman Mark Canha's two-run single in the first inning, but Cal Poly came back with a run in the top of the second inning and seven runs in the third inning to coast to a 11-4 victory Sunday in the third game of the three-game series at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears, who captured the first game of the series, 12-8, but lost game two, 10-5, fall to 9-7 overall. The No. 24-ranked Mustangs improved to 11-4. Cal was paced by two hits apiece from juniors Jeff Kobernus and Dylan Tonneson, and sophomore Brian Guinn.
Cal Poly's D.J. Gentile hit a lead-off home run in the top of the second inning off of Cal freshman right-hander Erik Johnson (1-1, 3.0 innings, six hits, eight runs, three earned runs, one walk, four strikeouts) to get within, 2-1, and then exploded for seven runs off of Johnson in the third inning, highlighted by Luke Yoder's grand slam to make the score, 8-2. From there, the Bears were only able to score a run in third inning on catcher Tonneson's RBI single and a run on the fourth inning when designated hitter Guinn tripled off of Mustang starter DJ Mauldin (2-1, 7.0 innings, seven hits, four runs, two walks, six strikeouts) and scored on junior center fielder Brett Jackson's RBI groundout.
Jackson extended his hitting streak to all 16 of Cal's games this season with a single in the second inning. He leads the Bears with a .403 average (27-for-67, seven doubles, a triple, three home runs, 13 RBI).
Cal will next travel to Pacific on Tuesday, March 17 at 6 p.m. in Stockton, before opening Pac-10 play with a three-game series in a versus Bay Area rival Stanford, beginning Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
