SACRAMENTO -
The California softball team lost its fourth straight game after a 2-1 defeat to Sacramento State in eight innings on Tuesday at Shea Stadium. Cal mustered six hits on the afternoon and fell to 22-8 on the season. The Hornets scored on a first inning solo home run and on a game winning single in the bottom of the eighth.
The Bears take on Pacific on Wednesday in Stockton at 2:00 p.m.
Bernice Masaniai had a home run for the Bears in the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1.
Sacramento State's Rachel Miles helped the Hornets score in the bottom of the first when she knocked her first homer of the season, a solo shot that cleared the right field wall off of Marissa Drewrey.
Drewrey and Megan Schaefer were in a classic pitchers duel for most of the game, and both getting out of jams at key times. Sacramento State left at least one runner on base in every inning but the third, and finished the game stranding 11 runners on the base paths. Cal left seven runners stranded.
The Hornets had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs for Jamie Schloredt, but Drewrey induced Schloredt to foul out to left field.
Cal had two singles in the top of the eight, but could not score. In the bottom of the eighth, Alicia Noriega's clean single to left field in the bottom of the eighth drove in the winning run. Drewrey (14-7) took the loss for the Bears, allowing eight hits and two runs over 7.2 innings.
