BERKELEY -
The No. 15 California Golden Bears (32-15, 8-7 Pac-10) closed out their weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Oregon Ducks (15-29, 2-13 Pac-10) Sunday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field.
The Bears looked to jump on the Ducks early, getting their first two batters of the game on base. Sophomore first baseman Valerie Arioto walked, advancing to second when freshman left fielder Jamia Reid singled through the left side. The Ducks' starting pitcher, Samantha Skillingstad, induced a strikeout and a pair of infield pop ups to get out of the inning without surrendering a run.
Skillingstad and Bears' junior pitcher Marissa Drewrey dueled it out from the circle. Neither pitcher allowed a base runner to advance past second base until the bottom of the fifth inning.
With two outs in the fifth, Jamia Reid legged out an infield single to third, just the third hit of the game for the Bears. The Bears' DP, senior Gina Leomiti, followed with the hardest-hit of the game, a smash to right center field that pinged off the wall, scoring Reid from first on the RBI double.
Drewrey walked the leadoff batter in the sixth, but got a pair of strike outs and a groundout to second base to preserve her one-run lead. After the Bears went in order in the sixth, Drewrey came back out to the circle, three outs away from the first no-hitter of her career. She again walked the leadoff batter, but the Bears' junior catcher Bernice Masaniai nailed Oregon's pinch runner as she tried to steal second. With one out, Drewrey stuck out the next batter, pulling her within one out of the no-hit bid. The Ducks sent pinch hitter Brittany Rumfelt to the plate. Rumfelt stroked the first pitch she saw down into the left field corner for a double. With the no-hit bid gone, Drewrey looked to preserve the shut out, overpowering the next batter, striking her out on three pitches.
The one-hit performance was the fifth time this season a Bear pitcher allowed a single hit in a game and the third time this season Drewrey has thrown a complete-game one-hitter. She improves her record to 18-10.
Jamia Reid went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring the lone run for the Bears. Leomiti was 1-for-3 with the RBI double.
The Bears will play a non-conference game on Wednesday, April 29 at UC Davis before returning to Levine-Fricke field for their final homestand of the season, hosting Arizona and Arizona Sate May 1-3. The game on Friday, May 1 will be televised on a tape-delay by Fox Sports.
