The California baseball team lost the third game of the three-game series at Arizona, 12-8, Sunday in Tucson. The Golden Bears dropped to 19-26 overall and 6-15 in the Pac-10 with three straight loses (13-4, 8-4, 12-8) to the Wildcats. Arizona improved to 22-21 and 8-13 in league play. Sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBI, and junior designated hitter Blake Smith went 2-for-5 with a solo home run in the sixth inning and two RBI. Junior center fielder Brett Jackson and sophomore right fielder Mark Canha also had two hits apiece for Cal.
The losing pitcher for Cal was junior left-hander Michael Bugary (3-4), who made his second career start, going 4.0 innings with nine hits, seven runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Freshman right-hander Dixon Anderson pitched the final 4.0 innings with eight hits, five runs, one walk and three strikeouts. The winning pitcher for the Wildcats was starter Daniel Workman (2-1), who threw 6.0 innings with five hits, two runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
Cal scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning when Jackson led-off with a double down the left field line and later scored on Canha's RBI single to left field. The Wildcats came back with four runs in the second inning, one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The Bears tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning on Smith's solo home run to center field to get within, 7-2. But, the Wildcats ran away with the game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Trailing 11-2, Cal scored six runs in the eighth inning on Smith's RBI infield single, RBI single by freshman catcher Chadd Krist, RBI single by sophomore left fielder Dwight Tanaka and Guinn's three-run triple. The Wildcats added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Steve Selky's second solo home run of the game for the final, 12-8, margin.
Cal will next host UC Davis on Tuesday, May 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Evans Diamond. Earlier this season the Bears defeated the Aggies, 21-4, April 15 in Davis.
