LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - Junior designated hitter Blake Smith and freshman catcher Chadd Krist knocked in runs in the top of the ninth inning and freshman right-hander Dixon Anderson forced a game-ending double play in the bottom of the ninth as Cal baseball upended UCLA, 3-2, Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Golden Bears, who won their first Pac-10 road game of the season, improved to 21-26 overall and 7-15 in the conference. The Bruins, who sit in second place in the league, dropped to 23-23 overall and 13-9 in conference.

The winning pitcher for Cal was sophomore right-hander Brian Diemer (2-6), who picked up the win by entering the game in the seventh inning and throwing 2.0 innings with one hit, one run, one walk and three strikeouts. Anderson picked up his third save of the season when, after giving up a sacrifice fly to Eddie Murray to make the score, 3-2, he was able to get Justin Uribe to ground into a double play to end the game. The losing pitcher for UCLA was freshman starter Gerrit Cole (4-5), who threw 8.1 innings with only two hits, three runs, one earned run, five walks and 11 strikeouts.

Smith then drove in Jackson with a single to center field off of UCLA reliever Gavin Brooks, followed by Krist's sacrifice fly to center field that scored Canha.

UCLA plated the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning on a throwing error by second baseman Jeff Kobernus on a potential double play ball that allowed Uribe to score. Cal answered with a run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single to center field by sophomore shortstop Brian Guinn, scoring freshman right fielder Danny Oh, who led-off the inning with a single to right field.

The Bears received a strong pitching effort from freshman right-hander Erik Johnson, who threw 6.0 innings with six hits, one unearned run, four walks and three strikeouts.
