SEATTLE, WASH. -
The No. 12 California Golden Bears played spoiler Friday in Seattle, earning a 1-0 victory over the Washington Huskies.
Junior pitcher Marissa Drewrey settled in for a pitchers duel, scattering four hits in her seven-inning complete game. Drewrey walked three while striking out six.
The Bears also were limited to four hits, their biggest coming in the sixth inning. Freshman left fielder Jamia Reid legged out a triple, the first solid scoring opportunity for either team in the game. Junior second baseman Shannon Thomas bunted in the next at-bat, the ball rolling to the pitcher who committed an error trying to get the speedy Reid at the plate. Reid was safe, putting her team up 1-0.
Sophomore first baseman Valerie Arioto had one of the Bears four hits and also drew a walk, going 1-for-2 batting in the third spot in the lineup. Junior short stop Taylor Kelly and freshman centerfielder Frani Echavarria accounted for Cal's other two hits.
Drewrey worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh inning, the Huskies got their leadoff run aboard after she was hit by a Drewrey pitch. Sophomore catcher Sanoe Kekahuna threw the runner out as she tried to steal second. Drewrey got the next batter to pop up a bunt attempt and then struck the final batter of the game out to earn her 21st victory of the season. It was ninth time this season Drewrey pitched a complete game shut out. She improves to 20-10 on the season.
The Huskies fall to 40-10 (13-7 Pac-10). The Bears improve to 35-17 (10-9 Pac-10).
The Bears will finish out the regular season on Saturday with a 12 p.m. game against the Huskies in Seattle. Gametracker live stats will be available on CalBears.com.
The Bears will learn their post-season fate on Sunday night when the NCAA announces the invitations to the post-season tournament and the Regional match-ups. The announcement will be broadcast live at 7 p.m. Pacific Time on ESPN-U.
