BERKELEY - Fifth-ranked California opened its Pac-10 Conference dual-meet season with a 157-135 victory over Arizona State on Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears won 12 of 16 events against the Sun Devils and improved their record to 3-0 (1-0 Pac-10). Arizona State's record fell to 6-4 (2-3 Pac-10).

Cal senior Lauren Boyle (200- and 500-yard freestyles), junior Erica Dagg (100 backstroke and 100 freestyle) and freshman Caitlin Leverenz (200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke) each won two individual events. Dagg also swam on Cal's two winning relays: the 400-medley relay and 400-free relay. The meet, which began during a downpour, opened with the 400-medley relay, won by the Cal foursome of Dagg, Leverenz, junior Amanda Sims and sophomore Liv Jensen in an NCAA B qualifying time of 3:41.84.

Next, sophomore Sara Isakovic led a Cal sweep of the top three spots in the 1000 free, posting a time of 10:05.32. Junior Sara Sun was a close second in 10:05.59 and junior Katie Kastes was third in 10:10.00.

Boyle then claimed the first of her two victories, posting an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:48.48 in the 200 free. Jensen was second in 1:49.71. Later, with the sun finally making its way through the clouds, Boyle won the 500 free in 4:49.51 (NCAA B).

Dagg edged Arizona State's Jamie Martinez in the 100 back, 56.23-56.78. Cal junior Hannah Wilson was third in 56.80. Dagg later won the 100 free in 50.33.

Leverenz won the 200 fly in 2:00.32 and five events later won the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.88, which was.51 seconds off her season-best time.

Jensen clocked her season-best time of 22.91 to win the 50 free. Her 22.91, which is Cal's second-fastest 50 free this season so far, was also an NCAA B qualifying time.

Sims, the 2009 NCAA champion in the 100 fly, won the event against ASU with a time of 54.63, which was just one hundredth of a second off an NCAA B qualifying time. In December, Sims posted Cal's fastest 100 fly of the season, with an NCAA B qualifying-52.96.

Bears senior Heather White won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.95.

Freshman Kelsey Heiken collected Cal's best finishes in diving, placing second on the three-meter springboard (278.18) and third on the one-meter springboard (264.45). ASU's Elina Eggers swept the diving events, with a score of 305.18 at one meter and a mark of 319.13 at three meters.

Martinez won the 200 back (2:02.34) and Rebecca Ejdervik claimed the 100 breaststroke (1:03.18) to round out ASU's two other wins on the day.

The Cal quartet of sophomore Colleen Fotsch, Sims, Dagg and Jensen closed the meet by winning the 400-free relay in a time of 3:26.84.

The Bears return to Spieker tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 23 to take on No. 2 Arizona. Prior to the meet, Cal will honor its six seniors - Boyle, White, Alexandra Ellis, Courtney Eronemo, Blake Hayter and Amanda Larson - who will be swimming in the final home meet of their college careers.
