LOS ANGELES - Despite strong performances by its relays and freshman Caitlin Leverenz, No. 5 California lost its first dual meet of the season, 153-147, to No. 9 USC on Friday at USC McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Golden Bears' record fell to 4-1 (2-1 Pac-10), while the Trojans improved to 10-1 (3-1 Pac-10). Cal claimed seven events, including three wins by Leverenz, the opening 200-yard medley relay and the closing 200-yard freestyle relay. USC won nine.

"We had some great races," said Cal head coach Teri McKeever, a 1983 USC alumna. "A good portion of the team was better than we were last weekend. SC did a great job. And Caitlin did very well with the three wins. Lauren Boyle did an impressive double in swimming both the 1000 and 500 freestyles, and that medley relay got us off to a good start. There was a lot of good, fast swimming."

The Trojans have now beaten Cal in two straight, dual-meet seasons.

The Cal B quartet of senior Heather White, senior Alexandra Ellis, junior Katie Kastes and senior Amanda Larson clocked an NCAA B consideration time of 1:40.51 to edge the USC A squad by .16 seconds and win the 200-medley relay.

Larson also swam on the winning 200-free relay, leading off a foursome that included Boyle, junior Erica Dagg and junior Hannah Wilson. The Cal A relay posted an NCAA B time of 1:32.43 to best the second-place Cal B relay of sophomore Sara Isakovic, sophomore Colleen Fotsch, junior Amanda Sims and sophomore Liv Jensen (1:32.83, NCAA B).

Leverenz won the 100-yard breaststroke in an NCAA B consideration time of 1:02.25, 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:12.52 (NCAA B) and 200-individual medley in a time of 1:58.87 (NCAA B).

Boyle, a senior, posted a Cal season-best time of 9:43.27, by more than four seconds over the next finisher, to capture the 1000 free. Bears junior Sara Sun swam a season-best time of 10:04.97 in the 1000 free.

Jensen matched her season-best time of 22.77 (NCAA B) to lead a 1-2-3 Cal sweep of the 50 free. Dagg was second (23.31) and Wilson was third (23.50) in the sprint. Jensen was Cal's fastest Bear in the 100 free, with a second-place time of 49.89 (NCAA B). Isakovic posted a season-best time of 50.20 (NCAA B) to claim fourth place.

Dagg recorded Cal's best finish in the 100 backstroke, taking second in 55.67. Junior Kelsey Hoff posted a season-best time of 58.18 to place seventh.

In the 200 back, White finished third in 2:02.34. Hoff clocked a season-best in this event as well with a time of 2:04.06 to take sixth. Senior Bear Courtney Eronemo was eighth in a season-best 2:07.13.

Sims swam a time of 54.03 (NCAA B) to take a Cal-best second, behind USC's Lyndsay DePaul. The Trojan's winning time of 52.86 broke the pool record of 53.52 set by former Cal star Dana Vollmer last season. Bears sophomore Ursula Dailey posted a season-best time of 55.21 to take sixth.

Sophomore Molly Hayes collected Cal's top finishes in diving, taking third on the three-meter springboard (273.15) and fourth at one meter (246.59). Ariel Rittenhouse, USC's U.S. Olympian, won at one meter (305.54) and three meters (351.00).
