Three different Golden Bears scored to power No. 10/11 California to a 3-0 blanking of Pac-10 foe San Diego State on Friday at Edwards Stadium. A.J. Soares, Chris Ortega and Servando Carrasco netted goals, as the Bears improved their record to 8-1-2 (4-0-0 in the Pac-10) and extended their unbeaten streak to eight games. Cal also improved its winning streak to four games, with all four wins over conference opponents. The Aztecs fell to 7-4-1 (1-3-0 Pac-10).
Cal has scored 15 goals during its four-game winning streak for an average of 3.75 goals per game.
Today, the Bears got on the scoreboard early, as senior forward Davis Paul took a corner kick that found its way to Carrasco, a senior midfielder. The ball eventually reached Soares, a senior defender, who scored from close range for his team-high tying fifth goal of the season. Cal led, 1-0, at the 10:08 mark of the first half.
The Aztecs held its share of the possession and outscored Cal, 9-3, in the first half, and Cal took its 1-0 lead into halftime.
At 59:51, Bears senior midfielder Hector Jimenez passed to sophomore midfielder Chris Ortega, who scored past SDSU goalkeeper Brad Byrns and made the score 2-0 with his first goal of the season.
Paul tallied another assist on another corner kick that reached sophomore defender Steve Birnbaum, who headed a pass to Carrasco, for another close-range shot and goal.
The Aztecs outshot Cal, 3-1, the rest of the way. Raymundo Reza took the most dangerous of those three shots, forcing a save from Cal junior David Bingham at 70:42.
Cal kept Reza, the Pac-10 leading scorer entering the day, scoreless, though the talented senior forward compiled a game-high seven shots today.
Bingham wound up with five saves for the game, while Byrns had four.
Paul continues to lead Cal in points (17) and assists (7). He is also tied for the team lead in goals (5) with Soares and sophomore forward John Fitzpatrick.
Cal returns to Edwards Stadium for a 2:30 p.m. tilt with No. 13 UCLA at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Bears entered today's game tied for the Pac-10 lead with the Bruins with identical 3-0-0 conference records. UCLA (8-2-1) plays at Stanford at 7:30 p.m. on Friday before playing Cal on Sunday.
