BERKELEY -
Tenth-ranked California had battled 13th-ranked UCLA to a 0-0 draw on a cold and wet Sunday at Edwards Stadium, until Kelyn Rowe's blast from 25 yards out in the 105th minute in double overtime gave the Bruins a 1-0 victory over the Golden Bears. The loss prevented the Bears from keeping sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 Conference. Instead, Cal is tied with UCLA again; each has a 4-1-0 conference record. The Bears' overall record fell to 8-2-2, while UCLA improved to 9-3-1.
Cal briefly held the conference lead by itself, after its 3-0 win against San Diego State on Oct. 15 gave the Bears a 4-0-0 Pac-10 record and UCLA's 2-1 upset loss to Stanford on Oct. 15 left the Bruins with a 3-1-0 conference record.
This also marked Cal's sixth overtime game of the season and fifth double-overtime game of the year.
The loss to the Bruins snapped Cal's eight-game unbeaten streak and four game-winning streak.
The Bears had been on a scoring spree, posting 15 goals and allowing just one in its last four wins, all over Pac-10 opponents. But they couldn't get on the scoreboard today despite taking 16 shots. UCLA had the edge with 19 shots.
UCLA outshot Cal, 7-5, in the first half, when Bears junior goalkeeper David Bingham made five of his eight saves, on a field wet from earlier rain. Bruins goalie Brian Rowe made one save.
In the second half, senior midfielder Hector Jimenez took one of Cal's best scoring chances on the day when he fired the ball off a UCLA goalpost at 55:56.
Cal senior forward Davis Paul put three shots on goal and senior defender Demitrius Omphroy took one shot on goal, forcing Brian Rowe to make four of his five saves in the second stanza.
Paul took both teams' last shot of the second half, as he redirected a Jimenez cross on the UCLA net at 88:36. Brian Rowe made the save, and the game eventually went to overtime.
In the first 10-minute, sudden victory period, UCLA outshot Cal, 3-2, with Kelyn Rowe missing a few yards wide of Cal's goal at 98:13.
Cal sophomore midfielder Chris Ortega shot wide on the first shot of the second overtime at 104:04. Rowe put away the second shot of the period at the 104:49 mark.
The Bears will next play San Diego State and UCLA again, as they tangle with the Aztecs on Friday, Oct. 22, in San Diego and battle the Bruins on Sunday, Oct. 24, in Los Angeles.
