STANFORD, Calif. -
John Fitzpatrick scored two goals and Servando Carrasco added a third to give California a 3-0 victory over rival Stanford in both teams' Pac-10 opener on Saturday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. The Golden Bears improved their record to 5-1-2 (1-0-0 in the Pac-10), while the Cardinal dropped to 4-5-0 (0-1-0 in the Pac-10).
Fitzpatrick, a sophomore forward, scored the game's first goal at the 15:02 mark, heading in a cross by senior forward Davis Paul to give the Bears the 1-0 lead. Fitzpatrick scored past Alexander Hutchins, Stanford's second goalkeeper of the night, after starter Jason Dodson left earlier in the first half due to injury.
The Bears took their 1-0 lead into halftime, when they also held a 13-4 shots advantage over the Cardinal.
The rivalry match featured more end to end action in the second half, as evinced by Cal's 14-13 leads in shots the final 45 minutes. Bears junior goalkeeper David Bingham made four second-half saves, including a stop of a dangerous shot by All-American Bobby Warshaw at 67:44.
The Bears came on strong late, as senior midfielder Hector Jimenez played a nice through ball to Fitzpatrick, who fired past Hutchins from inside the box for his second strike at 88:13. Jimenez also set up Carrasco, a senior midfielder, for his goal at 89:10.
Cal eventually outshot Stanford, 27-17. Hutchins and Dodson each made two saves for the Cardinal.
The Bears continue their conference slate on the road, taking on Oregon State on Oct. 8 and Washington on Oct. 10 in the Pacific Northwest.
