Final Stats
STOCKTON -
Behind three points from senior Megan Psyllos, the California field hockey team blanked Pacific, 3-0, Friday afternoon in Stockton. With the win, Cal improved to 8-7 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in NorPac play. The Tigers fell to 2-12. Senior Lisa Lohre and sophomore Megan Shimojima also tallied scores for the Bears.
"We played solid all around today," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "This week we worked a lot inside the 25, and it paid off. We were really playing with confidence."
Shimojima got things rolling for the Bears early with her goal in the seventh minute, which turned out to be the gamewinner. Psyllos garnered the assist on the goal.
"We all kind of relaxed after that first goal," Onstead said. "That gave us a little more freedom. Maddie (Hand) made some good saves early on too. One of the things you're always concerned about is the other team catching some breaks, and Pacific did get some early scoring chances on some breaks, but Maddie made some good plays."
Hand made three saves to earn her first shutout of the campaign.
Lohre notched her goal on a penalty shot in the 34th minute to add to the Bears' lead. Psyllos put the game away with her score in the 44th minute. Psyllos collected a deflection and was able to find the back of the cage. Psyllos now has 14 points on the year (six goals, two assists).
Cal outshot Pacific, 19-4, and recorded 11 shots on goal.
The Bears return to Maxwell Family Field next week for the regular-season finale against No. 19 Stanford on Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. The match will be the final game at Maxwell for Lohre and Psyllos.
