Twelfth-ranked California played San Diego State for the second straight week, this time tying the Aztecs, 1-1, in double overtime on Friday at the SDSU SportsDeck. The Golden Bears' record is now 8-2-3 (4-1-1 in the Pac-10), while San Diego State's record moved to 7-5-2 (1-4-1 Pac-10).
Senior forward Davis Paul set up the Cal goal at 9:27, taking a corner kick that found senior midfielder Servando Carrasco, who headed in his fourth goal of the year. Paul collected his team-leading and career-high eighth assist on the play.
At the 74:54 mark, San Diego State's Raymundo Reza blasted a free kick on goal, and Cal junior goalkeeper David Bingham made a diving save to tip the ball over his crossbar.
A few minutes later, the Aztecs found their equalizer when Falke Verwer headed in a goal off a Jose Altamirano assist at 81:31.
The Bears had a prime opportunity to score in the first overtime period. Sophomore midfielder Chris Ortega sent a long ball to Paul in the SDSU box. Paul fired, but goalie Brad Byrns dove to make his only save of the match at 92:07.
Sophomore midfielder Tony Salciccia shot wide at 100:55 for Cal's last shot of the game.
Reza took the final shot in the second overtime, firing wide at 105:47.
San Diego State outshot Cal, 26-9. Bingham made six saves in 110 minutes.
This marked Cal's seventh overtime game of the season. Six of the seven have gone to double overtime.
Cal continues its conference schedule when it battles UCLA at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 24, in Los Angeles.
