TEMPE, Ariz. - Although Sunday's game at Sun Devil Stadium between California and Arizona State lasted 110 minutes, it was a stretch of just under seven minutes that made the difference. The Golden Bears scored first and the Sun Devils scored the equalizer, but neither scored in the remaining 55 minutes for the game to end in a 1-1 tie.
Cal is now 7-4-5 overall and 2-3-1 in the Pac-10 Conference while ASU stands at 8-4-3 and 2-2-1 in the Pac-10. The Bears lost and tied in their weekend trip to the desert with both games heading to overtime.
The first play of the second half was none other than a Cal goal, 3:13 into the second stanza. Emi Lawson passed to Katrin Omarsdottir, who shot it to the far post from 15 yards out. The score was the Icelandic national team member's second of the season.
A foul gave ASU a free kick at the start of the 55th minute, setting up a prime goal-scoring opportunity for the Sun Devils. Devin Marshal took the free kick and Kari Shane headed the ball in towards the far post for her second goal of the season and the second score of the game.
While the Bay Area experienced wet conditions on Sunday, the Bears played in Tempe under a partially cloudy sky with temperatures reaching the high 70s.
Cal spread its 11 shots well across the board with Lawson, Megan Jesolva and Betsy Hassett all taking two. The Bears got one shot from five others - Kaitlyn Fitzpatrick, Katrin Omarsdottir, Mekenna DeBack, Genessee Daughetee and Lauren Battung.
Overall, Cal was outshot, 14-11, but overpowered ASU, 6-5 and 3-2, in shots in the second half and first overtime period, respectively. Neither Pac-10 squad got off a shot in the final 10 minutes.
Emily Kruger made an incredibly eight saves in 110 minutes of work between the posts while Alyssa Gillmore stopped five for the Sun Devils.
A grand total of 27 fouls - Cal with 15 and ASU with 12 - were issued in addition to four yellow cards (ASU with three).
ASU got to work quickly in the first half, Sierra Joseph taking a shot at 1:09 that Kruger saved. The Sun Devils took a corner kick at 1:32 and Devin Marshall fired on goal but missed high. Mekenna DeBack took Cal's first shot on goal in the fifth minute, but the ASU defense blocked it.
At the close of the first half, ASU was outshooting California, 7-2, with Kruger with five stops to her credit already.
In the same minute that ASU scored, Cal fired off two shots - one from Lauren Battung and another by Lawson - both of which Alyssa Gillmore saved. Kruger saved the next shot on goal from ASU - one from Devin Marshall at 58:56.
While neither team scored in the overtime periods, it was not for a lack of trying. Cal took three shots and ASU had two in the first 10-minute overtime period. With no goals scored, the teams ended in a tie, the fifth this season for the Bears.
With its second plane trip of the season complete, Cal returns to the friendly confines of Edwards Stadium. Next weekend, the Bears host their version of the Big Game - the Bay Area Derby - against rival Stanford on Saturday, Oct. 30.
The Cardinal, heralded as the best team in the nation by all three polls, holds the all-time series lead with the Bears at 14-11-4 and has won the last two games. The match, which is set to kick off at 3 p.m., with the 2009 national runner-up is free for all to attend.
